Homeopathy’s Legacy in the USA

The Homeopathy Choice Insider

Hello! This is the second of our new communications program, the Homeopathy Choice Insider. Every Monday, you’ll get an email from us where we will pull back the curtain and provide you with a quick 3-5 minute insider’s view of what we work so diligently to do each week at Americans for Homeopathy Choice. Our goal is to create a powerful, educated, and informed group of members who support our advocacy work. Today, let’s talk a bit about history.

  • The homeopathic physician who became a U.S. senator and his role in drafting the Food, Drug & Cosmetics Act (FD&CA).
  • How the FD&CA classifies homeopathic medicine.
  • The FDA’s reinterpretation of this law over time is threatening our access to homeopathic medicine.

Summary of Today’s Episode:

Homeopathy has a rich history in the United States and is part of the American fabric. In 1900, the Samuel Hahnemann Monument was dedicated in the heart of Washington DC, in Scotts Circle. Attending the dedication ceremony were leading citizens of the United States at the time, including United States President William McKinnley and first lady Ida McKinnley, Attorney General John W. Griggs, General Wilson, and District Commissioner Henry Brown Floyd MacFarland.

About 40 years later, New York Senator Dr. Royal Copeland was the primary champion for drafting the Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act in 1938. Senator Copeland had been the health commissioner for New York during the 1918 flu epidemic and, being a homeopathic physician, had excellent results in managing the outbreak in New York. The New York Times even recently wrote an article about him at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. His success during the flu of 1918 was a big part of why he advanced in his political career and eventually became a senator. This law, the FD&CA, is an important document and shows us that homeopathic medicines were always intended to be treated as unique and separate from pharmaceutical drugs.

The law says that anything in the National Formulary, the United States Pharmacopoeia, and the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States are drugs. So homeopathy is legally a drug in the USA, but our medicines weren’t lumped into the NF or the USP…they have their own pharmacopeia in the HPUS. At the time and over the years, both Congress & FDA had good institutional knowledge about homeopathic medicine, but that institutional knowledge was lost as time went on.

Today we see the severe impacts the loss of this knowledge has on our access to this excellent medicine. As mentioned in my previous insider’s bulletin, FDA is now reinterpreting the law. Essentially the agency is lumping homeopathic medicines together with pharmaceutical drugs. We are concerned about this. But we are here to do our part.

I want to remind you about one fact: What really matters in life? For me, one thing I strive for is to look back with no regrets! We must do good in this world and leave it a better place for the next generation. We know that maintaining access to homeopathy is critical for a better world. Let’s do something where our children will look back on us and thank us for our efforts in ensuring they have access to homeopathic medicine. I hope you’ll continue connecting with us every Monday morning as we bring you our Insider bulletin. Stay active and together.

Well, that’s it for this week. Join us next week as we talk about the center point of our organization, the Homeopathy Action Team!
