First Major U.S. Homeopathy Research Conference a Success!

The Homeopathy Choice Insider

Welcome back to Homeopathy Choice Insider as we relaunch on a monthly schedule to keep you informed about the latest developments regarding protecting our right to choose homeopathy. Here’s what’s happened that you need to know about.

Our job is not to change the world;

our job is to steward the gifts we’ve been given.

Today’s Report:

Health for humans, animals, plants, and the whole planet

In late October, the first major homeopathy research conference in the United States brought together nearly 500 participants from 25 different countries (and six of the seven continents) for 41 research presentations over three days on the campus of UConn Health, a major sponsor of the conference and home to the University of Connecticut’s medical and dental schools and its sprawling academic medical center.

The overriding message of the gathering: “There is abundant evidence for homeopathy’s clinical benefit,” according to conference organizer Peter Gold. It says something that one of the sponsors of this conference was a major academic medical center, Gold added. “We are no longer talking about whether homeopathy works. We are now talking about how it works.”

‘Groundbreaking Science’

The conference, “Groundbreaking Science: Homeopathy and the Future of Global Health” was held October 20 to 22. The word “global” was extended to include not only humans but also animals, plants, and environmental improvement of soil and marine environments. The University of Connecticut’s own nationally known specialist on the biology and epidemiology of fungal plant pathogens presented at the conference and was part of a roundtable discussion on agro-homeopathy.

Another presentation centered on the role of “high-diluted bioactive compounds (HDBC) to enhance sustainable aquaculture practices.” Homeopathy is now for fish, too!

A panel discussion on the role of nanoparticles and nanostructures in homeopathic preparations included a chemical engineer, a theoretical physicist, a psychiatrist, and several molecular biologists, all now working as medical researchers in a variety of locales around the globe.

Gary Smyth, a medical doctor who is president of Britain’s Faculty of Homeopathy, a training and membership organization incorporated by Parliament, summed up the wholistic outlook of the conference in his opening remarks: “People, animals, and environment are closely linked and entirely interdependent.”

Know the patient

Smyth quoted Canadian physician William Osler whose words capture the main concept in homeopathy: “It is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a patient has.”

Smyth pointed to one of the key challenges in global health that homeopathy is well-suited to address: treatment of infection without antibiotic resistance. This is not something that is predicted to happen; it is happening right now. Over 1 million people are dying each year now from antibiotic-resistant infections and that number is projected to rise to 10 million by 2050.

Ultimately, Smyth said, physicians want to “offer our patients the best of both worlds,” meaning the best of conventional and complementary medicine including homeopathy.

Conference organizer Gold said one immediate outgrowth of the conference is the formation of working groups on homeopathy in agriculture, family medicine, and pain management. Gold said the success of this conference has been encouraging enough that he is already in discussions about another research conference in the United States in 2025.

We’re responding to the FDA’s withdrawal of homeopathic eye drops

You’ll soon be receiving emails—if you haven’t already—that will provide you with a way to fight back against the FDA’s unwarranted withdrawal of homeopathic eye drops from the U.S. market. This is the second category of homeopathic medicines that the agency has withdrawn. You may recall that injectable homeopathics are no longer allowed in the United States. The reason will be familiar to you: The FDA now considers all homeopathic products to be “unapproved new drugs” that “may not be legally marketed” and subject to withdrawal at any time. The FDA is using the same excuse again. The agency cites NO harm to consumers and NO adverse reaction reports. It alleges some manufacturing process violations for some of the companies. Even if those are cleared up, we can see no way for these eye drops to return to the U.S. market given that the FDA also removed products without any violations

You’ll be able to send a message to your members of Congress to ask them to contact the FDA to request that these products be allowed to return to the market.
